York DNA Project

An easy way to interpret the DNA Results

Invitation to Join

Dennis York, Judson Crow, Courtney York and Bruce York are working on a report that will list the current York
results and what they mean.  In the mean-time, below you can see three charts
{Group 1, Group 2, & Groups 3, 4, 5, & 6}
that show the results we have received so far (6-17-2004).

v     Note we have divided the DNA results into three different groupings.
·        This is because we have received fantastic results in identifying two major
groupings of related YORK families with two different common York progenitors
plus a third grouping of yet to be identified common York progenitors
·        Within each group, the numbers in black are all alike.  The numbers in blue or red
depict the differences.
·        One to two differences or mutations can usually be explained by a variety of reasons.
·        But, more than two mutations - or different result numbers - mean these are totally
separate family lines.
v     In Group 1, we have 8 participants that are descendants of Jeremiah York (1684/94 England-Abt 1770 VA/NC)
through four of his sons;
·        Semore York (1727 PA – 1783 NC)
·        Thomas York (1729 PA – 1790 NC)
·        Henry York (1732 MD – 1817 NC)
·        Joseph York (1734 MD – 1809 AL)
v     In Group 2 we have another grouping of 8 York’s that are descendants of Western
North Carolina origin including the Sgt Alvin C York's family.
v     In Groups 3, 4, 5, & 6 we have a third grouping of yet to be identified common York progenitors,
one of which is a York descendant from Maine and another from Kentucky.
Although paper documentation representing many years of genealogical research by
dedicated York genealogists the DNA test results has been most surprising.  All Group 1 and 2
participants or sponsors involved have confirmed many relationships of various branches
of the York family. Previously family tradition has led us to believe that many of the York’s in
the USA descend from one man, Jeremiah York (1684/1694 England – 1770 NC), as you can see,
the DNA results do not back up that theory. (Group 1 vs. Group 2)
v     We are currently trying to enlist male YORK descendants to participate in the York DNA project
whose progenitor was possible one of the following:
  • Brantley York (1805, Randolph Co, NC -  1891, Alexander Co, NC)
·        John York (1704 VA – 1740 VA) (Descendants in Kentucky and Indiana)
·        William York (1755 NC- 1839 IN) (Descendants in Ohio)
·        William YORK (b: 1660 in Baltimore, Maryland)
  • Richard York (Abt 1755, Surry Co, NC - Abt 1815, Jackson Co, TN)
  • Richard York (JUL 1786 in Pendleton Dist., SC - AFT 1860, Macon Co., TN)
  • Peter York (Abt 1770 Philadelphia, PA) His daughter Sarah York 1805 married
Andrew Jackson II, son of President Andrew Jackson)
·        Patrick York (1810 Ireland - 1879 NY)
·        York’s from England and Ireland
·        York’s from New England
·        York’s from Maine
·        York’s from Texas
·        York’s from anywhere
v           Please join in this important YORK DNA project:
·               The 12 marker test is $101 including postage.
·               You can place the order on line your self either as a sponsor or for a very close male York relative.
·               You can pay by credit card or have an invoice sent to pay by check.
·               Please find attached a personal invitation to join in this very significant York DNA project
to identify common York progenitors.  Please submit your male YORK candidate’s ancestral
line to  Dennis York.

v     The DNA results were a huge surprise to the large group of York researchers who expected most of the York DNA results to match each other.  As we learn more about these results and what they mean, we will post or modify the information here.

v     Keep in mind that the Arledge and Allred families are having similar surprising results.  Take at look at their pages to see their results.  Although both thought there was only one Arledge family and/or only one Allred family in America - both have received DNA results that prove this is not true.  To date there are 2 different Allred families and 2 different Arledge families per the DNA results.  So, our DNA research needs to continue.
