Who Are

John Allred and his wife Sarah Owen Allred?

by:  Kerry Marshall

My Great Grandmother was Leona Allred who was born 1874 in Tennessee.  She married Elmer Marshall in Clinton County, Illinois in 1890.  This information comes from the Clinton County Marriage Record Book.

Leona was the daughter of John Allred and his wife Sarah Owen per their marriage record.  Sarah is listed as the Head of Household in the 1880 Clay County, TN census.  Per the census, Sarah was 47 years old at the time.  Her children were:  Marion (son) 22, Luckey (daughter-in-law) 21, Everett (grandson) 5, James (grandson) 3, McColgin (son) 8, Leoney (daughter) 7, and Elizabeth Cooper (daughter) 21.

From this I know that Leona was born around 1873.  But where was John, Leona's father?  Is he dead?  Or is he the man, 77 years old, listed living with his son, also named John, and his family in the 1880 Overton County, TN census?

The 1870 census for Clay County, TN shows a listing for John Allred (67), his wife Sarah (37) and their children.  Note Elizabeth is 13 on this census.  Allowing for census taker's possible (common) mistake with ages, this appears to be the same girl.  Note the son James was 16 per this listing.  It's possible that he married, fathered 2 children, then died by 1880.  Or he could have been traveling, looking for work; Tennessee was devastated by the War and times were hard.  Taking these clues, I think this is the same family.  John is listed as being born in North Carolina and Sarah was born in Illinois.  All of the children were born in Tennessee.

The 1860 Overton County, TN census shows John Allred (49), wife Sarah (29) and children.  The ages are a little "off", but census takers commonly made age mistakes.  John is listed as being born in North Carolina and Sarah born in Illinois.  All children born in Tennessee.  Again we see Elizabeth as 3 years old which corresponds with the 1870 and 1880 census.  Note her brother Louis was 11 months old in 1860.  In the 1870 census he is 8.  Taking these clues, I think this is the same family.

But, who were John and Sarah?  Per the book "The Allred Family in America" written by Dr. Rulon C. Allred, John is the son of Francis who was the son of Solomon.  The source listed is the 1840 census (1840 F Tenn.10, pt 8, p.2:  Utah Gen Soc., AFB) but the 1840 census only listed the head of household, no spouse or children's names were listed.  To my knowledge, Francis did not leave a will or estate document.  So, how can I prove or dis-prove this?

If you have any information about John and Sarah, or if you descend from them, please contact me by clicking on my name.  Thanks!
