Solomon Allred and Martha Weeks Click here to read letters sent to and by Solomon and Mary's family A descendant of John Huston Allred contacted me several years ago with the following information: John was born 28 December 1844 in Overton County, Tennessee, the son of Solomon Allred and Martha Weeks, according to his death certificate. He died 13 April 1930 in Hector, Pope County, Arkansas. John married Margaret Alabama Robberson 23 February 1868 at Barry County, Missouri. The 1850 census of Osage Township, Carroll County, Arkansas, page 138, listed Martha Allred as head of household. Others living in the household were Gamblen, age 16; Phebe, age 13; Marion [male], age 11; Sarah J., age 9; John, age 7; Mary, age 5. It appears that Solomon Allred, Martha's husband died between 1845 and 1850, certainly before the 1850 census was taken, and was the son of Johnie and Phebe (Thompson) Allred. I am unaware of any further information that would prove this theory, but would like to know if such documentation exists. While traveling through Joplin, Missouri, we decided to stop at the public library to see if we could find information about Solomon and Martha Allred's descendants in that area of Southwest Missouri. A book on Barry County cemeteries showed the location of the cemetery where Gamblen and Mary Allred were buried, so we drove to that area and found the cemetery. Clark cemetery isn't a large one, so I couldn't understand why we couldn't find the tombstone. Finally we noticed a stone that had been knocked off its foundation and was lying face down on the ground. The stone was so large that it took two of our teen-age sons and my husband to turn it over. Gamblen M. Allred [apparently named for his grandfather, Gamblen Weeks] was born 30 November 1836 and died 30 January 1892. Mary Allred was born 2 March 1842 and died 19 April 1876. |
