back to the North Carolina page back to the Mystery Allreds page Jesse Allred (1783-1844) was my Great Great Great Grandfather and is my "brick wall". To my knowledge, no one has ever been able to figure out who his parents or siblings were. Hopefully, one of you reading this will be able to provide the missing info that will solve this mystery. Jesse was probably the grandson or great grandson
of one of the 4 Allred men who were living in central NC in the mid 1700's.
However, I can't find any documentation proving he was in Randolph County - or
anywhere - prior to 1808 when he bought his first tract of land from William
Erwin. Jesse married Alsey York. The 1810 Federal Census Randolph County, NC listing for them is: 1 male between the age of 10 - 16 years 1 male between the age of 26 - 45 years 1 female between the age of 26 - 45 years 1 female over the age of 45 years Jesse was 27 years old in 1810, so the male aged 26 - 45 is obviously him. The female aged 26 - 45 must be Alsey, his wife, who was only 20 years old at the time, but age mistakes are common on census records. The male aged 10-16 years and the older female aged over 45 years are mysteries. Perhaps they were the younger brother and mother of either Jesse or Alsey. If you know who they were - please let me know! Jesse and Alsey raised 9 children that I've documented: Cynthia Ann (1810), Isabella (1812), Emsley (1812), Settle (1816), Murphy (1816), Elizabeth (1820), Jesse Jr. (1823), Maloy (1825) and Sylvania (1837). You can travel forward or backward in the family tree depending on which name you click on next. Note Sylvania was much younger than the rest of
her siblings. It's possible she was actually Jesse's grand daughter, but I
can't prove that. She is
I have wondered if Lydia Allred, daughter of the "original" John could have been Jesse's mother. I researched Lydia extensively after learning that she had been raped in 1786. True, Jesse's tombstone says he was born in 1783 and Lydia was raped in 1786 per court documents, but tombstones do contain the wrong dates at times. I could find no evidence that she become pregnant as a result of the rape, and ruled her out. Now, I'm wondering if I reacted too quickly and Lydia might possibly have been Jesse's mother. That would explain his naming a child Lydia. But, this needs further research. Click here to see a copy of the research report I wrote on Lydia in 2000. Alsey died sometime in the 1860's but her grave
has not been found. She is probably buried next to Jesse at Shiloh United
Methodist Church in northeast Randolph County, NC. The graves on either
side of Jesse's are unmarked and Emsley lived a little further south, about 1 mile from Jesse's land. Click here to learn more about Emsley, who was my Great Great Grandfather and view some family photos. Emsley's brother, Jesse Jr., bought land just
down the road from his father's land. Today, Jesse Jr's house is located
on the Randolph Church Road about
1/2 mile from the Red Cross crossroads. It was occupied until 1999,
but is now sitting abandoned. It is owned by Jesse's GGGrandson, Hubert
Allred.
Maloy was listed on the 1880 Federal Census for
Randolph County as a prisoner in the county jail in Asheboro. Court
records show he was convicted as a counterfeiter. He was making his own
money and revenue stamps for moonshine. Creative, requiring artist talent,
but unfortunately, illegal. He is listed on the 1900 Guilford County, NC
Federal Census as living alone. He is not found after that, and probably
died soon afterward. His grave has not been found. Click
here to learn more about Maloy's family and view some of their family
photos. The photo on the right is Maloy. Cynthia Ann, nick-named Sythia, was listed on the
1850 Randolph County, NC Federal census as living with her older brother, Emsley
and his family. On the 1860 census, she is back home, living with her
mother, sisters Elizabeth and Murphy and Settle moved to Surry County, NC sometime in the 1840's. They both settled in the Mt. Airy township, but later, Settle moved to Carroll County, VA where he is buried. I have found no further info on the mysterious Lydia who was listed in the 2nd land record. One more mystery: In 1839 and again in 1845
