Linda opened the meeting by asking how many would be interested in going on
a one-day trip to Old Salem.
About 1/2 in attendance expressed interest,
so discussion centered on cost and plans. Old Salem was founded in the mid
1700's by Moravians who had migrated to North Carolina from Pennsylvania and
New York. The village has been restored and features museums and lessons
on
life in Colonial North Carolina. This trip has been scheduled for
Saturday,
March 27th. Details will be posted on the ECAFA web page (mailed to
members
without internet access).
Discussion turned to the abandoned Lane-Foust Cemetery located 1/2 mile off
the road in the woods near Ramseur. Work days had been planned earlier
this
winter, but were cancelled because of bad weather. Franklin told the
members that he and Lawrence Allen had visited the cemetery recently and
found that beavers have built a dam and flooded the only road and bridge
leading to the cemetery. Wayne told the members that he was checking
around
to see about alternatives ways into the cemetery, but at present the only
alternative way that he knew of was covered with downed trees as a timber
company was clearing nearby land. Franklin and Wayne agreed to check on
the
beaver dam and alternative ways of getting to the cemetery. In the
meantime, the next scheduled cemetery work day will be Saturday, April 10th.
We will concentrate on the Lane-Foust Cemetery at that time since it is in
such horrible shape.
Linda announced that the Randolph County Genealogical Society has a new web
site: www.ncrcgs.com . She asked
that everyone visit and send "blunt and
honest" feedback to her as the web site grows. Linda is the web
master for
that site.
Linda also announced that the Moore
County Genealogical Society is hosting a
Seminar on "Colonial Migrating Paths to the South" on March 20th
in
Whispering Pines. One of the guest speakers will be Helen Leary.
Members
interested in attending are invited to "carpool" with Linda that day.
Darrell presented the Reunion Feedback results to the members.
Information
/ Feedback was compiled using the surveys which had been sent out to
everyone who had attended the Reunion last September. A copy of the
compiled results will be posted on the ECAFA web page with these minutes.
In early Summer, we will take these results into consideration when planning
the 2004 Reunion scheduled for the 2nd weekend of September.

Reunion Survey Feedback Summary
Discussion then turned to the DNA project.
Linda handed out a new graph of
recent results and discussed what the results meant. To date, descendants
of the Elrod, Aldred, Aldridge, Arledge and Allred family have participated
in the Allred DNA Project. Aldred and Allred are a match proving these
families are related. Arledge and Elrod did not match, proving these
families are not related to Aldred or Allred. The Aldridge results are not
back yet. A detailed report on this will be posted on the AFO web site
this
weekend and will be in the current AFO newsletter (issue # 58).
The next ECAFA meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 6th, at 6pm at the
Golden Corral in Asheboro.
