ECA Meeting Minutes
October 25, 2002
We had a great ECA meeting last night - very productive!
20 were present
including Barbara and Phil Blevins and Barbara's mother, Mattie Florine
"Flo" Allred, from Florida and Dennis York from Dallas, Texas.
We began the meeting by discussing our bank account. Treasurer James
Eugene
Allred told us we had $1,650 left in the bank after all reunion related
expenses were paid. This includes the $150 that was donated by some of the
Allreds at the reunion in Texas a couple of weeks ago. After discussion,
the group voted to use some of the money (approximately $280) to place a new
tombstone on the grave of Alfred Allred (1833 - 1854) who is buried at
Patterson Grove. Alfred's original tombstone is broken into 4 pieces which
are lying scattered on the ground. Alfred's family line is: John,
Jonathan, Samuel, Alfred. The new tombstone should be placed on the grave
by Thanksgiving.
We also voted to send the Overton County Historical Society (Livingston, TN)
a $50 donation. They publish a quarterly newsletter which is sent to Linda
as part of "swap out" arrangment with the AFO. The AFO sends
them a copy of
their newsletter. Linda puts the Allred related exerpts from the OCHS
newsletters on the AFO web site and will be placing copies of the
newsletters in the Randolph Room so everyone will have access to them.
We then discussed the Brigham Young University Molecular (DNA) Genealogy
project. Linda has been gathering information about this project and asked
if the ECA would be interested in participating during our 2002 Allred
Reunion. Dennis York also told us that the York Family Organization has
expressed interest in combining the two reunions in 2002. After disucssion,
we voted to proceed with the application process to BYU so we can
participate in this study. We also decided to invite the York family to
join in the reunion. Combing the two families will help satisfy one of the
requirements of the DNA project as they want as many different DNA samples
as possible. For more information on the BYU project, go to
http://molecular-genealogy.byu.edu/
and/or contact Linda.
Discussion turned to the 2001 Week of Allred scheduled for November 26 - 29.
We will remain in Randolph County this year so we can visit two abandoned
graveyards: Trogdon on HWY 49 and the Garrett / Lane family graveyard.
We
will also use part of the time to do some tombstone repair work.
Linda updated everyone on the AFO bus tour project that Alice Allred
Pottmyer is working on. Everyone got a handout showing the various places
across the country that we expect to visit during this bus trip which will
start September 9, 2001, leaving from Randolph County, ending in Salt Lake
City. If you would like additional
information about this bus trip, please contact either Linda or Alice
(pottmyera@aol.com)
One thing that was not discussed at the meeting that I want to tell you
about now is Alice and Linda are planning a trip to South Carolina, Georgia
and Tennessee to do research for the bus tour December 3 - 7. If you are
interested in helping with this research or would like to join us on this
research trip, please contact us asap.
Upcoming ECA Trips:
Sunday, December 9th we will travel to Caswell County (north of Burlington)
to attend church services at Allred New Mission Baptist Church. A reminder
of this trip will be sent out closer to time. If you are interested in
going, please contact Franklin or Linda.
Friday, December 14th we will take a one-day trip to Biltmore House in
Asheville. We will travel by 15 passenger van, leaving from the Walmart
parking lot in Asheboro at 7am. Breakfast stop along the way. Lunch
at the
Deerpark Inn. Supper on the way back. For more information, contact
Linda.
The meeting ended as everyone looked at a newspaper clipping about the newly
renovated Allred Theatre in Pryor, Oklahoma. The clipping was sent to
Linda
by AFO member Betty Loper who lives in Broken Arrow, OK. We decided it
would be really great to go there one evening to watch a movie...........if
it just wasn't so far away!
We ask your continued prayers for Allred cousin Linda Smith (Utah) and her
family. Many of you met Linda last year at the reunion when she and
Dawnell
Griffin spent two weeks at Linda Cooper's house. Linda remains on
life-support barely hanging on to life. For more information, please
contact Eddie Clay.
Next meeting Thursday, February 7, 2002 at 6pm at Dry Dock Seafood in Siler
City.
