After we enjoyed a wonderful covered dish lunch, the business meeting began.  Linda explained that some members of the Trogdon family had been in contact via e-mail and had expressed concern over the name of the Allred-Trogdon Cemetery.  They had stated many concerns about the name, stating that the "traditional and original" name (as they understood it) had always been the Billy Trogdon Cemetery and requested that the ECAFA change the name of the cemetery to this traditional name.  Linda read from some of the e-mails that had been sent, and explained the Trogdon feelings on the subject, then opened the floor for a lengthy discussion in which all members present were requested to voice opinions/suggestions.

ECAFA members acknowledged the Trogdon concerns and request to change the name, but during the discussion, and voiced their own concern that although the Trogdon family may have called the cemetery the Billy Trogdon Cemetery, the official name used by the Randolph County Genealogical Society in their Cemetery Records has always been the Allred - Trogdon Cemetery.  Also, in various family files three names had been found in reference to the cemetery:  Trogdon Cemetery, Allred - Trogdon Cemetery, and Billy Trogdon Cemetery.  Although the Trogdon family may know it as the Billy Trogdon Cemetery, other families who also have ancestors buried there may know it by another name.  After continued discussion, Dennis York made the motion (2nd by Sue Estep) to retain the official title / name of Allred - Trogdon Cemetery on the deed, in the Register of Deeds office, tax offices and all other official offices, but to add "aka Billy Trogdon Cemetery and Trogdon Cemetery" to all future advertisements, correspondence and / or web site information regarding the cemetery.  All ECAFA members present (and 1 by proxy) voted yes.

Linda then expressed the Trogdon researchers' wish to place a permanent monument at the cemetery to honor their family.  The monument is just in the beginning design stage, but would possibly be made of granite, marble or stone, with a bronze plate with the possible writing: "Allred - Trogdon Cemetery, aka Trogdon Cemetery and the Billy Trogdon Cemetery.  This cemetery was established upon land owned by William Trogdon born in Maryland and died in 1805.  He was the son of William Trogdon born 20 August 1695 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, son of Thomas and Mary (Jones) Trogdon who came to this area in the 1750's and was killed on Sandy Creek during the Revolutionary War in 1783."   The Trogdon researchers have volunteered to pay for the monument and it's placement and were seeking permission to do so from the ECAFA.  After discussion, Harlan Sexton made a motion (2nd by Dennis York) to allow the Trogdons to place the monument at the cemetery with the following (below) conditions / stipulations.   The ECAFA members present (and 2 by proxy) voted yes.

1.  The ECAFA will have final approval on placement which is to be within the easement area surrounding the cemetery, not within the cemetery itself, to avoid placing the monument on top of an existing grave.
2.  The Trogdons will provide documentation, prior to monument placement, to prove any information written on the monument such as dates, names, etc..  This is part of an on-going effort to ensure all information connected to the cemetery is as accurate as possible.
3.  The Trogdons will provide a copy of the paid final receipt for the monument for ECAFA records prior to placement of the monument.

Discussion then turned to erecting a display case at the cemetery which will contain information about the cemetery, the ECAFA efforts to preserve and protect it, and the people buried there.  Design was discussed and decided on and John Allred made the motion (2nd by Jesse Allred) that the ECAFA erect the display case at the cemetery.   Plans were made to build the display Friday, October 24.   Anyone wishing to help with this project should plan to meet at the cemetery at 2:30pm that day.  (Some are meeting at the Blue Mist Restaurant at 1pm for lunch if you would like to join them.)

Linda, with ECAFA approval, asked Dennis York to begin research into the possibility of finding and applying for grant money to pay for future projects for this cemetery.  Dennis agreed and will begin research within the next several weeks after he and Hilda return to their home in Dallas, Texas.

Linda told the ECAFA that she will be writing an article to be published in the Randolph County Genealogical Journal about the Allred - Trogdon Cemetery and the ECAFA efforts to preserve it and identify graves.  This article should be published in the Winter issue of the Journal (February 2004) and aimed at inspiring interest in the project from others who may have ancestors buried in the cemetery.  Currently, the identified family names for the cemetery are:  Trogdon, Allred, Feree, York, Odell, Julian, Diffee, Hammer and Spencer.  Most likely, as we research and learn more about the cemetery, we will uncover more names.  It seems that this is possibly the oldest community cemetery in the county and contains over 200 graves, so a lot of the original Randolph County settlers most likely have family ties to this cemetery.

ECAFA Treasurer Harlan Sexton told everyone that he had found a financial record showing former treasurer James Eugene Allred had paid property taxes for the year 2003 on the cemetery.  He was asked to look into this matter, since no taxes should have been billed or paid, and report back at the next meeting.

Dennis York explained that a few months ago he had paid $105 for a York DNA test that had not been used yet (the York family member backed out of taking the test at the last minute).  Dennis is currently looking to find another York descendant to take the test.   Harlan acknowledged the payment and will "hold it" to give Dennis time to find another York to take the DNA test.

The next ECAFA meeting will be held Thursday, December 4, 2003, at 6pm at the Golden Corral on Lawndale Drive, Greensboro, NC.

Reminder:

The display case will be built and erected in the Allred-Trogdon Cemetery this Friday, October 24th.  To help, be there at 2:30pm.

Don't forget the November 17, 2003 Cemetery Work Day at the Allred-Trogdon Cemetery.

Don't forget the bus trip to Tryon Palace scheduled for December 13, 2003.  Deadline for paying / reserving your seat is November 15, 2003.  See Harlan or Becky for more information.
